Characters are either there as plot devices or just to pad out gameplay and it sucks.
A game focused on granduer and it certainly shows with its visuals and lore but it fails hard in terms of story because it abandons so many character arcs and rushes others. Zestiria is probably the most controversial one for me in its development history and overall execution.
Both these games are at the bottom tier of my experience with tales games for similar and different reasons. Xillia 1 and Zestiria are both examples of a rushed game done wrong for me.
